Obama did it. Or we did it I should say. THANK GOD.
America can get past its racism enough to elect a black president, it can make lives happier for animals, it can shoot down resolutions limiting abortion rights. But it apparently cannot get over its homophobia.
I cried as Obama spoke last night. I cried all the way from South America. From my little hostel room in the shady district of Surquillo that I rented for the sole purpose of watching the elections. I have hope for the future.
But I am also scared for the future. I cried this morning upon reading the election results after 4 hours of restless sleep. Three more states banned gay marriage and one state prohibited gay couples from adopting. My beloved state that I was so proud of last May decided that I am a second-class citizen not worthy of the same rights as everyone else.
I really hope Obama lives up to what he says. I am ready for change.
Now comes the hard part.
Edit-
Apparently hate and inequality bring about this reaction:

"Hooray! We will continue to be better and more worthy than homosexuals! They will never be equal to us!" |

| I feel like this situation sums up New York City... |

Today I was on the 2 train to Brooklyn from Manhattan. A crazy possibly homeless man got on at Wall St. Throughout the rest of the ride he sang "My Humps" very loudly while banging the subway doors with all his might to keep a beat. Here is the part that is so New York about the whole situation: nobody showed a single reaction. The car was filled with mothers with babies, Wall Street suits, students, etc... Not one person cast a glance his way or looked around the car. The man I was sharing the pole with simply avoided my eye contact...a usual subway activity. I was just sitting there trying hard not to giggle to myself. Please imagine a bunch of people crammed into a tiny subway car and this man is getting his groove on to Fergie...screaming the lyrics and banging on the wall...and people stare straight ahead as if absolutely nothing is happening. It was hilarious and so characteristic of this city. I love it. |

| | Rockies/Phillies game | ] | There's nothing like walking past a group of NYPD officers loitering around downtown and hearing phrases like "fucking Iraqis" surface from them. On a similar note, there was an officer at a Bedstuy precinct who came out as gay to his coworkers. He then had the pleasure of hearing his colleagues call him a "faggot" and laugh and call him names when he brought his partner to an NYPD function of some sort. His boss said he was going to move him to the West Village precinct to "be with his people". I'm really glad that a bunch of such well-educated, informed, and open-minded people patrol my city! Hooray for the NYPD!
Guys did you know that Kellogg created Corn Flakes as a cure for masturbation? It's true! Apparently back in the day when they thought masturbation was related to illness, they found some way to roll out the corn that was supposed to "cure" one of his or her masturbatory tendencies. Now you know!
Can I express some love for Dr. Karla Jay, my woman studies professor? She is probably the most amazing lesbian, woman, HUMAN BEING in the world. She told us a fun anecdote today about how she was on some talk show in the 70's coz she is this amazing pioneer in gay/lesbian rights. The talk show host accidentally introduced her as "Karla Gay" instead of "Karla Jay". She came out and told the host that his Freudian slip was showing. He then asked her, "why do you people call yourselves gay...you don't seem very happy", to which Dr. Jay replied, "Well I used to call myself a practicing homosexual, but I've had enough practice now". OHSNAP. I love this woman and I love her class. We get to learn all about the lesbian lives of Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, Angelica Grimke, etc...it's amazing. Her humor doesn't seem to be appreciated by everyone in the class but I find it hilarious, so I sit back and chuckle to myself for three hours a week. Amazing. |

I'm really smart and spilled nail polish all over the floor and my computer. So now it looks like I murdered someone on my hardwood floors, and it looks like Lappy has a sunburn.
Let me tell you something about my amazing roommate. My amazing roommate orders her food from Fresh Direct so it gets delivered to our door. My amazing roommate then takes the food that she orders and makes me delicious meals like risotto and chicken and green beans and salad and ice cream sundaes for dessert. Next week she's making homemade mashed potatoes and mac and cheese (like baked in a pan!) for us. I love living with my amazing roommate.
This semester has been kind of rocky thus far...emotionally and stuff. Maybe it's a "mid-college" crisis or something...I dunno. I'm going to visit Facey Face on Long Island this weekend, so that should be therapeutic.
I've been getting my things together for studying abroad in Peru next semester! Today I met with my crazy yet fabulous Spanish professor and she was helping me figure out which classes would transfer correctly and she ended up telling me about which tea to drink for altitude sickness when I go to Cuzco. It was probably a half hour conversation about tea. She's the greatest.
I'm taking lots of gay and Spanish classes...and some Italian too. They are all great classes except for, *shudder*, public speaking, a graduation requirement. I want to slit my wrists when I think about that class.
Two more classes until the weekend...I guess I should go pack. |

Well I moved into my dorm last night. It's a lovely one bedroom apartment that I share with one other person. It has a fully equipped kitchen (with a dishwasher!), a bathroom, and a living room/dining room thing. I'm excited about it. It has lots of windows so it's bright and cheery. I'll take pictures of it once I get all my crap settled. I'm waiting for my roommate to get here so we can move around the furniture, unbunk the beds, etc... All my stuff is at Andrea's so I have no towels or sheets or hangers or anything! It's a bit of a stress. All I have are clothes and my coffee maker.
For the first time, I am feeling significantly homesick. I'm sure it'll pass in a week, but it's weird. Usually it's so easy to pick up and go...but it was much harder this time. I'm trying to keep busy and not think about it. I've got five billion errands to do before classes start. Plus I have to unpack and shit.
I would like to say that this apartment has a ridiculous amount of furniture. My roommate and I have a desk, armoire, bedside cupboard/table, hutch, and dresser EACH. We also have a sofa, dining room table, and very large coffee table. It's a bit overkill.
Yeah that's about it...I already saw Andrea, Sam, and the Face. More to comeeee. :-) |

[Aug. 21st, 2007|03:10 pm] |
Okay so when I went on my trip to Colorado I wrote a Livejournal entry on the train and never posted it. So now I'm going to post it...the pictures are on Facebook if you're interested. Well here I am on the train ride home from my little family getaway in charming Denver, Colorado. For those of you that don’t know…I just spent a week in Colorado meeting relatives I’ve never met and seeing my 94-year-old grandfather in his new little nursing home place. Now unlike normal families, my fam decided it would be a grand idea to take an Amtrak train to Denver instead of flying there like normal people. A plane ride takes 2.3 hours. A train ride takes 36. Our train left at 7am last Wednesday and didn’t get in to Denver til around 9pm on Thursday. Guys…let’s talk about trains. Reasons why trains are the most torturous form of transportation: -Their speed. You know things are bad when a huge motor home in the slow lane is passing you up. -Their food. Cold and stale tortellini with a sauce composed mostly of sugar and death for $13? Classic. -Their random stops for minutes and even hours without any announcements as to why we are delayed. For example, we were supposed to get into Sparks, NV a half hour ago but we have been at a dead stop for about two hours. Do we know why? Nope. My parents say we’re on “train time”. Let me tell you that train time fucking sucks. -Sleeping. Okay I’ll admit the seats are much more comfortable than airplane seats but seriously folks…who can sleep sitting up? Last night I managed to snag a double seat all to myself and had a nice four hour nap laying in an awkward crumpled fetal position. This is the life, my mom says. -Electrical outlets…or lack thereof. An iPod lasts about eight hours, a laptop about three, and a portable DVD player about four. Fifteen hours does not equal two days. After all my electrical friends die I’m left with nothing but boredom and crossword puzzles. -Bathrooms. Try changing your clothes, brushing your teeth, washing your face, and doing your business in a chamber that I seriously think may be smaller than an airplane bathroom. It doesn’t work. Also what’s with all the conductors and drivers of the train being white men and the dining car staff and car attendants being black men and women? Like there was seriously not one single exception to that rule. My mom said it must be because not much has changed or something. I’m glad we are still practicing some slavery traditions guys! So I’d also like to say that Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada are pretty much worthless states. Sure Nevada has Airforce Amy, Wyoming has Cheyenne, and Utah has…Mormons…but the states themselves are pretty much worthless. I’ll let Colorado stick around because Denver is not such a horrible place, and I have relatives that live there and stuff. The actual vacation itself (you know, aside from the four days of train hell) was not too bad. My grandpa was cantankerous but I would be too if I lived in that nursing home in Brighton, Colorado. We stayed with my cousin (who is actually the same age as my mom even though it’s her niece) and her husband who were extremely nice. They refer to soda as “pop” and are slightly afraid of gay people, but they’re pretty harmless and very friendly. I met a plethora of other relatives. I have third cousins out there coz my grandpa is also a great-great-grandpa. That’s confusing! In Denver we saw the Real World house, the Molly Brown house, the capitol building, the city hall building, etc… My aunt lives in Littleton so we visited her and drove by Columbine High School which is right around the corner from her. Other shit that we saw is in the pictures. My grandpa is a funny old man. He tells long and drawn out stories and then sings dirty songs and tells distasteful jokes. Here are some I can remember: “I saw a pretty lady, a mighty fine woman was she, she asked us group to come over, but the only one who was comin’ was me!” “I had some toy soldiers that I played with all day. One day my generals and colonels got lost. Now I sit in my room and play with my privates all day!” “I went to the grocery store and the checkout lady asked me if I wanted a bag. I told her she’d have to give me one coz I’d left my bag at home coz she wines too much!” He’s a role model, that one. I’ll be home in about eight hours and I cannot wait. (Omg the train is moving again!!!) Only about two and a half weeks and then it’s back to New York. This summer went by so incredibly fast…it blows my mind. |

Hi friends...I haven't updated in five thousand years so I thought I'd say HELLO.
Andrea was here for two weeks...Brittney has been here for the past week and she and Jannika are here for another. We're planning on having quite a delightful Pride Weekend. If you're going to be at the Dyke March tomorrow or Pride on Sunday call me up!
...I never have anything interesting to say anymore. Sad.
I miss New York, but I'm glad that most of my faves (but not all of you) could make the summer more bearable. I'm not excited for two months of work with no fun but ohhhh well.
Balkan dancing in Berkeley? Surprisingly fun!

So I'm really bored coz everyone is gone, Sam's at a final, and I'm just sitting here waiting for Dom to check me out and then I'll just sit here for another hour waiting for Sam. So I did some survey things. Enjoy!
Also please please please read my post below about host families!!! Thanks!

Okay so I never ever update anymore and for that I am sorry. But the situation is that I had finals and final papers and now I'm enjoying my last few days on this side of the country with no schoolwork or anything! The sitch is that I will be back this Wednesday evening. Are we excited? Excellent.
For those of you who care, these are my summer plans. People are visiting, I have millions of jobs, etc... Get ready:
- Home on Wednesday, May 16th
- Orientation for my internship at LYRIC on Thurs, May 17th
- Weird Program Coordinator job where I find host families for Japanese students for a week and plan their itinerary. Details below.
- Andrea visits: May 30th-June 14th
- Brittney visits: June 16th-July 2nd
- Jannika visits: June 22nd-July 1st
- Tegan and Sara concert(s) on July 22nd and 23rd...who's coming with?
- Ani DiFranco concert on July 14th...who's coming with?
- 10-15 hours of interning a week in San Francisco for LYRIC
- Possible employment at Cost Plus again from early July to end of August
- Back to New York on August 26th
Ta da! That's my summer. I hope to see many and all of you numerous times throughout the summer. Now here's the next situation:
ATTENTION: I am in DESPERATE need of host families for these Japanese tourists that I am planning a trip for. They will be here from July 23rd-July 30th. Just a mere week! The only problem is...their town center is in Fremont, so they will need to be driven to Fremont for their activities on some of the days. If I get enough host families in the Lafayette/Walnut Creek area, I can arrange some sort of carpool. The only thing required of host families is that they provide three meals a day and a bed (not necessarily an room) for their student. I know it's a lot to ask, but if ANYONE can help...I will be forever grateful. Tell your friends and families and everyone you know. Please! I am extremely desperate. Thanks!!!
Okay, that is all. See you guys Wednesday. I need all the help I can get for the host family thing!!! I appreciate any host family leads! Thanks!!! |

| | JavaScript? | ] | Guys, I haven't updated in about 75474523543 years, but I still don't have anything to say.
Over Spring break Jannika, Andrea, Katieboyce, and I took a little road trip to visit Janneke in Maine. It was pretty fun and eventful, though I've decided there is a certain degree of snow and cold that I am not willing to deal with. Janneke lives in a crazy folk-themed house that is kind of amazing. She has this crazy closet thing that we slept in. It was good times.
Zoe and Goat came to visit recently and that was amazing as well. Even though I narrowly avoided a bar brawl, it was a good nine days.
There's not much else to say except that I am extremely aggravated at Pace University's housing department. They are renting out dorms at this new residence hall in Manhattan, and in turn getting rid of more than half of the Brooklyn dorms. The prices at the new dorm are $5,000 MORE expensive than the Brooklyn dorms. Not only do I adore living in Brooklyn, I cannot afford anything more than I already pay. Hell, I can't even afford what I already pay. Since I'm going practically first during Room Selection, I am almost guaranteed a Brooklyn dorm. BUT my friends are not. I don't want to be the only person stuck in Brooklyn while everyone else is in Manhattan. Total lame, you guys. I'm just hoping everyone else will want the new, nicer dorms in Manhattan instead of the ghetto St George, leaving the Jorge to us.
"I'm going to say it until you want to shoot me"...oh but Professor, there's nothing new about that. |

Clearly that has everything to do with computers.
I know it's Tuesday morning (time for LJ update time), but I have so much to do that I actually can't update! I'm quite ill and I have 200 pages of translating to do for my new job, a proposal to write for a paper, and like sixteen e-mails to write. I probably am going to skip class later on so that I may take a nap and possibly sleep off this ear infection.
"I'm really well educated because I can speak coherently and fluently with a lot of different people".
So I'm sorry I can't give you a grand 'ol update. Instead I would just like to leave you with a music recommendation:

That is all. |

I better be part of that 20% or I am as dumb as a doornail.
So they're building a 70-story skyscraper across the street from Pace, and they've decided that they're going to insert the foundation pole things during the school day. So throughout the day the entire building shakes. It's kind of fun, but gets a little bit old when you're trying to calmly takes notes and drink your coffee.
Guys last week there was a blizzard in New York and we got a snow day. Instead of having class, my friends and I trekked to Hagen Daas and got ice cream while avoiding pelting ice shards and scary winds. At first I was a big fan of the snow, but now it's turned into gray/brown sludge and the salt put on the ground to melt the snow stains my shoes and pants and that's not cool.
Are you ready for a movie recommendation? Everyone spend $10 and see Music and Lyrics. It may look lame, but it is SO GOOD OMG. Hugh Grant is his usual hilarious self and Drew Barrymore is adorable. Plus the music is catchiest thing you will ever hear. I'm so serious when I say it's amazing...I was laughing throughout half of it. Also here's a fun thing. Just as the previews were starting, a homeless man off the street walked in to enjoy the movie with us. He was a bit off and was shouting random things during the previews. I guess someone told the people that work at the theater coz a group of them came in to escort him out as he was yelling, "WAIT! I need to see Drew Barrymore! Wait!!! It's Drew!" It was pretty amusing...only in New York...well, Brooklyn. Gotta love it.
So Goat and Zoe booked their tickets to New York and I am SO excited to frolic about with them. Probably everyone else should go and book tickets right now. kthnxbye.

Guess where I am everybody???
That's right, back in CIS 101 like I am every Tuesday morning. In other words I am sitting in the depths of hell for the next two hours. At least Katieboyce is seated to my right and makes my life complete. So we have to participate in a Blackboard discussion each week and it's worth 20 points. We are supposed to make a minimum of two posts by responding to others' posts and stuff. I made like five posts and somehow only got 15 our of 20. I FUCKING HATE THIS CLASS.
Also according to my professor, the three most important words in the English language are as follows: -Trust -Tolerance -Try
So now you know the three T's guys. I'm really glad I could share this with you. Feel honored.
Also the first rule of business: Don't surprise your boss; don't surprise him by being late, don't put him in an embarrassing position, etc...
I like that he assumes the boss is a "he". Ass hat.
He also just wrote on the board: Things Take Time Thanks Professor Fuckmook for those words of wisdom.
Last weekend was Sam's birthday and we celebrated by a) seeing The Last King of Scotland and b) going to Ginger's (duh). The Last King of Scotland is a good movie but there are two rather gruesome scenes that pretty much scarred me for life. One involved amputating a woman's limps and placing the arms where the feet should be and vice versa to make an example of her. Another involved hanging someone by his skin so that eventually he would fall out of it. I'll leave it at that.
Now for some pictures of Ginger's and Mel's birthday party (just a weekend chock full of birthdays!): |

| | My incredibly boring CIS teacher | ] |
I am in CIS 101 right now...a graduation requirement. It's supposed to be basic computer science where we learn Javascript, HTML, Excel, etc... Well according to our teacher, all of these applications are "learned" and not "taught". Thus he spends the two hours imposing his ideas on us, telling us we are stupid and naive, comparing us to his 6-year-old grandchildren, and condescending to us like he is almighty. We then go home at night, participate on the discussion boards on Blackboard, and read the books and teach ourselves the applications in order to do the homework. In class he talks about social responsibility, the USA, and other random shit that have nothing to do with teaching us computer science.
Recently he wrote the following words on the board: "your" "you're"
He then proceeds to explain to us for about ten minutes the difference between the two words and how we should always proofread our discussion board entries. I'm embarrassed for humankind. Katieboyce and I are IMing each other in boredom and disbelief...did he really just explain the difference between those two words? And he did it in such a manner that implied that this was brand new information to us! I'm a little perturbed.
Well, what else is new folks? My classes are just lovely. Except for this one. And astronomy. A word of advice: if you have to get a science requirement done and you think astronomy would be a fun and easy way to do it...THINK AGAIN. The labs are ridiculously easy but I wanted to learn about like...Orion and Neptune...not celestial spheres and astronomical units. I just hope the tests will be as simple as the tests.
Also this semester I might as well be majoring in Isabel Allende. I'm taking a Latin American Studies course on Latina Women in History and Literature and we're reading The House of Spirits and having a large unit on Isabel. My Spanish course is Latina Women Writers and we are reading Hija de la Fortuna. I'm so excited because Isabel is one of my favorite writers of all time and now I get to read her books for school! Also Wikipedia Sor Juana Ines de las Cruz. She is my new hero.
I have some pictures that Andrea took a couple weeks ago at our first Ginger's extravaganza of 2007. Please disregard the bright green shirt with the dark green skirt. I had a better outfit on earlier, but I got hot so I had to change.
Now our professor is telling us how to take the average of a group of numbers. Kill me or I'll kill him.
Oh and one last thing...
